OUR HISTORY

We are a United Methodist Church located in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, nestled alongside the beautiful Susquehanna river. We have been serving God here at the corner of Line Street and Catawissa Avenue since 1901. Our story has been one of God’s faithfulness as we have reached out to our community on “the hill,” and we are thankful for our past. But we are even more excited about the next chapter in our story, as God continues to call us to be a people of hope.

While the cornerstone of our church has always been Christ and his love, the cornerstone of the building at 319 Catawissa Avenue was laid in 1901, and the building was dedicated in December of that year.  Having been born out of the St. John’s Methodist Church in Sunbury, the people of that congregation provided the leadership and some of the necessary funding for this new church.  It became a separate church in 1905, with 153 members.

As the membership grew, so did the need for more space, and the building was enlarged in 1910.  Over the next several decades the church continued to grow and be a “light on the hill,” adding the first pipe organ and serving as a safe haven for the victims of the 1936 flood.  With the development of men’s and women’s groups, growth in the Sunday school, and a continued heart for sharing the Good News of Jesus with the community, the church continued to grow and added a new educational wing to the building in 1962.

The next 50 years saw continued growth and ministry, with new programs, new ministries, and more people touched by the love of a gracious group of Methodists, including hundreds who were ministered to during Hurricane Agnes.  Now in our 111th year, we embrace the new thing God continues to do in our midst, calling us to be a people who both discover and share hope with our community – to continue to be a light on the hill.  We are excited to see what the future holds as God moves in us and through us to our community.  We welcome you to come and be a part of our unfolding story.
